Introduction to Master Yan Zheng

A talented artist skilled in photography, tea ceremony, collection reading, Chan meditation, and calligraphy, Master Yan Zheng is dedicated to discovering the beauty of Chan in daily life. Upholding the philosophy of “not defining life,” he humorously guides people to seek tranquility amidst busyness, simplifying complexity and enjoying every moment. As a devoted follower of the Buddha, Master Yan Zheng believes that life itself is a work of art, and he wishes to explore the infinite possibilities of existence with everyone.

Host Overview

In my conversation with Master Yan Zheng, I felt as if I had entered a tranquil Chan temple, surrounded by the refreshing aroma of tea, with the symphony of art and life echoing in my ears. The master’s wisdom flowed like a gentle stream, gradually nourishing my understanding of life. He reminds me that art is not just the colors on a canvas but the discoveries in everyday life. As he puts it, “not defining life is an artistic way of living.” In this fast-paced era, we often find ourselves constrained by rigid frameworks, forgetting the essence of life.

When we discussed the story of “picking a flower and smiling,” I realized that the difference between artists and ordinary people often lies in their sensitivity to beauty. Master Yan Zheng’s humor made me understand that art and Chan are not lofty concepts but a relaxed attitude toward life, a way to find tranquility in the mundane.

We also touched on the flexible nature of art’s definition, just as the colors of life are diverse. The master encourages us to embrace change, continuously adjust our “definitions,” and nourish our souls. Ultimately, what I took away from this conversation was not just a renewed understanding of art, but a lighthearted philosophy of living.

Interview Transcript:

1, What is your perspective on the relationship between art and life? What role does art play in daily life?

Art and Life Relationship:

Art is not merely specific forms of works; it is an omnipresent element in life. Whether through internal contemplation or concrete creation, art enriches our lives and enhances our understanding and perception of the world.

Broad Perspective:

To me, art is everywhere in life. Every thought in the moment can be viewed as a manifestation of art, showcasing art’s infinite possibilities. This broad conception of art transcends traditional boundaries and is not limited to painting, photography, or any specific piece. Art can encompass the invisible, such as our thoughts, feelings, and the communication between people.

Narrow Perspective:

In contrast, the narrow understanding of art emphasizes concrete creative entities. At this level, art needs to be presented in some form, like the calligraphy I create related to Buddhism or paintings associated with Chan practice. Additionally, modern art and various art styles exhibited in museums and galleries represent significant expressions of narrow art. These concrete artistic creations provide objects for appreciation and evaluation, making the value of art more intuitive.

Dual Aspects of Art:

Through these two perspectives, we can strongly contrast the different embodiments of art in life. A broad view of art allows us to recognize that life itself is an artistic canvas, full of infinite possibilities and creativity, while a narrow view reminds us that concrete creations and works also hold significant importance in art.

2, Your photography often incorporates natural elements. How does this relate to your life philosophy? How do you combine the two?

Natural Elements’Role:

Natural elements play a vital role in my photography; they are not only the medium through which I express myself but also embody my life philosophy. Through these works, I hope to convey my understanding of beauty and love for life, allowing viewers to feel that purity and authenticity.

Attraction to Nature:

My photography’s incorporation of natural elements stems from my love for plants, flowers, and nature. This passion is not merely a simple preference but a profound emotional connection. It is my admiration for nature that drives me to capture and present these beautiful moments. Each piece reflects my inner yearning and reverence for the natural world.

Medium of Expression:

Elements such as nature, plants, and flowers become vehicles for expressing my thoughts and feelings. They are not static; they extend my personal emotions. For example, if I have a particular fondness for industrial styles or starry skies, those elements will become the core of my photography. They serve as mediums, carrying my understanding and inclinations towards specific themes.

Personal Inclination Expression:

My photography is not merely a simple record of external phenomena; it reflects my inner world. By choosing different themes and styles, I can showcase my thoughts and emotions. For instance, selecting to shoot starry skies or industrial styles not only highlights the beauty of those subjects but also conveys my admiration and appreciation for them.

3, What philosophies related to artful living have you discovered in the tea ceremony? Can you share some specific experiences?

Philosophical Connection:

The philosophical relationship between the tea ceremony and artful living is reflected in every detail and experience. Through the process of making tea, we can not only appreciate the beauty of life but also feel the profound culture and philosophy conveyed by the tea ceremony. This experience enriches our inner world and encourages us to continuously pursue the fusion of art and beauty in life.

Tea and Life’s Connection:

In our daily lives, tea is not only a part of traditional culture but also an essential medium for enjoying life and passing time. The famous phrases “Chan and tea are one flavor” or “Let go of tea, eat tea” embody the deep connection between tea, life, and art. Yet, each person’s experience of this connection is unique, which is the charm of the tea ceremony.

Process as Dialogue:

From the beginning of brewing tea to the end of drinking it, this process is filled with artistic insights. As the tea leaves slowly unfurl in warm water, they release their value and charm from a curled-up state. This transformation symbolizes not only the change in the tea leaves but also our inner growth and awakening. Just as Buddhism teaches, we need to continually unfold ourselves, pursuing inner completeness and tranquility.

Art of Creating Conditions:

During the tea brewing process, the water’s temperature and the choice of tea utensils are crucial for the tea leaves to fully express their aroma. These subtle factors create an atmosphere that allows the tea leaves to showcase their characteristics. Through this experience, tea drinkers establish a unique communication and exchange with the tea, sharing thoughts and feelings while enjoying the tranquility and comfort of the moment.

Cultural Heritage and Inner Joy:

The tea ceremony is not merely about tasting a beverage; it symbolizes centuries of cultural heritage. Through tea tasting, people not only enjoy the pleasure brought by the tea’s aroma but also experience the profound cultural depth and historical accumulation during the process. This experience makes us realize that the tea ceremony brings not only sensory enjoyment but also nourishment for the soul and enlightenment of wisdom.

4,In your reading and collection process, how do you understand the deeper meanings conveyed by artistic works? Are there any particular pieces that have profoundly impacted you?

Classics as Wisdom Carriers:

Classics are not merely artistic works; they are vehicles for conveying profound philosophy and wisdom. Through continuous reading and contemplation, we can appreciate the deep meanings contained in these ancient teachings, achieving inner elevation and growth. Each classic guides us along the path of light and wisdom, helping us continuously pursue self and truth in our life journey.

Transcending Ancient Wisdom:

In my reading of classics, I gain a deep understanding of the wisdom conveyed by ancient sages. These classics contain truths about the universe and life that transcend the limitations of time and space. Whether it is the teachings of the Buddha or the wisdom of bodhisattvas, they embody profound meanings beyond human wisdom. Therefore, to fully grasp these teachings is not an overnight endeavor; it requires continuous learning and practice for deeper comprehension.

Ongoing Learning and Insight:

My personal learning method involves daily reading and reciting classics like the “Heart Sutra,” “Lotus Sutra,” and “Earth Store Sutra.” Through this continuous learning, I aim not only to understand their truths and wisdom but, more importantly, to express gratitude and expectations towards the Buddhas and bodhisattvas. At different stages, each reading yields new insights, akin to the saying, “Reading a book a hundred times reveals its meaning.” Through persistent practice and understanding, I gradually integrate the wisdom from the classics with my personal life experiences, propelling myself towards a higher realm.

Particular Classics and Personal Inspiration:

Among the classics I share, I especially want to mention the “Lotus Sutra.” This classic is not only rich and complete in content but also represents the important teachings the Buddha delivered before his passing. It tells us that everyone inherently is a Tathāgata, and the completeness and wisdom within do not need to be sought externally. This idea deeply resonates with me, making me feel an instinctive attraction and pursuit during my reading.

5, How does your Chan practice influence your artistic creation? How do these two complement each other?

Deep Connection Between Chan and Art:

The relationship between Chan practice and artistic creation is profound and close. Chan’s philosophy not only enriches our life experiences but also provides inspiration and perspective for artistic creation. Through this complementary process, we can discover the beauty of art in everyday life and incorporate it into our creations.

Impact of Buddhist Culture on Art:

Looking at the influence of Chan practice from two angles:

first, as part of Buddhist culture, and second, its religious practice aspect. As a part of Buddhist culture, Chan’s philosophy profoundly impacts our daily lives and artistic creation. Chan is often seen as a state of tranquility, stability, and harmony, and this concept permeates our lives. When we observe with intention, even in simple acts like drinking tea, we can notice the steam drifting in the air or the elegance of incense smoke moving with the wind. These details, often overlooked, become beautiful and meaningful through the lens of Chan.

Stability and Purity in Practice:

From the practice perspective, Chan practices (such as sitting meditation and focus) can stabilize our minds and reduce distractions and clutter. When the mind becomes pure, our perception of surrounding matters enhances. In this state, we can discover more beauty in daily life and sense the subtle connections between things, even experiencing a sense of artistic appreciation in the rustling of leaves.

Unintentional Artistic Experiences:

Notably, these artistic experiences often occur “unintentionally.” Many people may overlook the details in life, but Chan practice encourages us to pay attention to the beauty of each moment. When our mindset is calm, even a bird passing by can become an artistic expression. This realization doesn’t necessarily require a camera to freeze the moment; rather, through our awareness, perspective, and thinking, we create a form of internal creation.

Deep Integration of Body and Mind:

Through the practice of Chan, our perception and thoughts continuously evolve, allowing each moment to be captured and fixed. These experiences and insights ultimately merge into our bodies and minds, becoming inseparable parts of us. Therefore, even if we do not present these moments as tangible works, in nature, our sight, awareness, and thoughts have already completed a form of creation.

6, How can we cultivate inner tranquility and happiness through an artful way of living? What advice can you share with our readers?

Cultivating Inner Peace and Happiness:

Through an artful way of living, we can cultivate inner tranquility and happiness. Art is not just an external expression; it is also an internal feeling and contemplation. As long as we are willing to explore and experience, we can find seeds of happiness in every corner of life, blossoming into beautiful flowers.

Awareness of Artful Living:

To achieve an artful way of living, we first need an idea or hobby. Without this awareness, life may seem mundane. However, once we recognize the presence of art, life becomes rich and colorful. Art exists not only in visible and tangible forms like exhibitions, galleries, and fairs; it also hides in every detail of daily life.

Open Mind to Feel Life:

We need to open our minds to feel the art in life. In daily life, even in simple gestures, we can capture artistic moments. For instance, observing the triangular structure formed by boats outside the window is not only a visual enjoyment but also reflects the vitality of the city. Such observations and feelings allow us to immerse ourselves in life and draw out the beauty of art.

Seed Effect: Subtle Influence of Art:

The process of engaging with art is like a seed sprouting; although there may seem to be no obvious changes at first, subtly, it takes root and grows within us. Through continuous experience and feeling, we can achieve inner growth and transformation without realizing it. This artistic sensation is not just appreciation of the external; it also enriches our inner world.

Defining Happiness and Cultivating Inner Peace:

Our understanding of happiness is often limited by external standards. We often believe that wealth, a house, and a family are prerequisites for happiness. However, true happiness lies in inner satisfaction and peace. Happiness is a form of subtraction; it can arise from accepting the present and finding contentment. Even in adversity, as long as we can perceive the beauty of life, we can still feel happiness.

Practical Suggestions for Cultivating Inner Peace:

①,Focus on the Present:

Practice mindfulness, concentrating on each moment, whether it’s drinking tea, walking, or simply breathing; these are ways to experience art.

②,Open Mind:

Actively seek beauty in life, focus on details, and capture those unintentional artistic moments, allowing the spirit to converse with nature.

③,Reduce Comparison:

Let go of attachments to external standards, stop unnecessary comparisons, accept your life situation, and enjoy the small joys of life.

④,Cultivate Kindness:

Spread kindness in daily life, be a light to others, or quietly live your own life; this inner richness will enhance our happiness.

⑤,Regular Reflection:

Spend some time each day reflecting on your feelings, recording beautiful moments in life, which helps better understand and feel happiness.

7, If you had the chance to travel through time, which era would you want to return to? Who would you want to meet? What would you say to them?

Desire for Cultural and Thought Pursuit:

The wish to travel through time is not just a longing for history but a pursuit of culture and thought. Dialoguing with Wu Zetian is an opportunity I wish to realize, allowing me to contribute my insights and suggestions to promote cultural prosperity and openness.

Returning to Shanxi’s Ancient Architecture:

As someone from Shanxi, I grew up surrounded by many ancient buildings, initially taking them for granted. However, when I left my hometown, I realized the high regard others held for Shanxi’s ancient architecture. This cultural background has fostered a deep love for ancient architecture, especially the styles from the Tang and Song dynasties. If given a chance to time travel, I would most like to return to the era of Wu Zetian’s rule.

Expectations and Communication with Wu Zetian:

As a modern Chan master, I would ask Empress Wu Zetian, “Your Majesty, if you are now 80 years old, what would you say to your 48-year-old self and your 18-year-old self? What wisdom and advice would you offer them? I believe this would certainly summarize the brilliance of your life!”

8,How do you view the self-breakthrough and persistence of the Empress?

Complexity of Wu Zetian’s Character:

Wu Zetian’s self-breakthrough and persistence reflect the complexity of her historical persona. Whether in her pursuit of power or self-transcendence, her actions have left a profound mark on the annals of history. When analyzing her, we should also consider the multidimensional and impermanent nature of history. Each interpretation is a reconstruction and understanding of this complex history.

Trailblazer as a Female Monarch:

As a female emperor, Wu Zetian undoubtedly broke traditions. Her thinking and vision surpassed the societal norms of her time, showcasing formidable observation and strategic abilities. In facing such an extraordinary figure, we can view her actions and inner world from multiple angles.

Duality of Persistence and Breakthrough:

From an ordinary person’s perspective, Wu Zetian may exhibit some persistence, reflecting her desire for power and status. However, as a sovereign, her persistence was also aimed at consolidating her rule and protecting her people. Viewed from a higher dimension, her actions might represent a self-breakthrough, seeking to transcend traditional constraints and open new spaces for women. Her persistence and breakthrough are intertwined, forming her unique leadership style.

Legitimacy and Buddhism Connection:

Regarding Wu Zetian’s connection to Buddhism, legends say she once offered a handful of sand to the Buddha, interpreted as a sign of her future ascendance to the throne. While we cannot verify the authenticity of these legends, they reflect her deep connection with Buddhism. This connection not only endowed her power with legitimacy but also provided a theoretical basis for promoting Buddhist culture. In this process, she needed to seek existing texts and legends as support to subvert the male-dominated social system.

Consolidating Power and Returning to Female Identity:

After ascending to power, Wu Zetian adopted various strategies to consolidate her rule, which was necessary given the historical context. Even when she ultimately returned to the roles of mother and empress, it reflected the dialectical relationship between power and family. In this process, her identity was not singular but multifaceted, being both a ruler and a mother.

Impermanence of Life and Pursuit of Meaning:

In considering Wu Zetian’s historical role, we should not be confined to a singular perspective. History itself is a cycle of birth and death, arising and ceasing, and Wu Zetian’s story is no exception. Interpretations of her can be diverse, and each understanding will vary based on personal experiences.

Pursuit of Meaning through Chan:

From a Chan perspective, the pursuit of meaning in life is essentially a process of projection and practice. “Borrowing the false to cultivate the true” means that in this illusory world, we seek to correct ourselves through practical efforts and experiences to reach a higher realm. This is not contradictory, for even if we understand the ultimate truths, the lived experiences of life remain significant.

9, How Can We Improve the Torn State of Mind in Modern Society, Where One Moment Feels Like Heaven and the Next Like Hell?

The notion of “one thought in heaven, one thought in hell” reflects the psychological turmoil prevalent in modern society. The experience of stress and emotional fluctuations is a process that everyone may encounter. By cultivating mindfulness, accepting and transforming our emotions, establishing a support system, and seeking inner meaning, we can improve this psychological state of turmoil. Ultimately, each individual can find their own inner peace and happiness in that fleeting “thought.”

The Extreme Contrasts of Thought

In today’s world, many people face immense pressure and often experience extreme emotional fluctuations. One moment we may feel anger, frustration, or even despair, only to be overwhelmed with joy by a fleeting moment of happiness shortly afterward. This mental state of “one thought in heaven, one thought in hell” reflects the deep internal struggles and divisions many individuals face.

Understanding the Nature of Thoughts

From a Buddhist perspective, the emergence of thoughts is entirely natural. Our thoughts and emotions are often swayed by external stimuli, and when confronted with unpleasant experiences, negative emotions can quickly arise. Conversely, when we have moments of tranquility and joy, our emotions can shift just as rapidly. As mentioned, negative thoughts do not necessarily signify a regression; rather, they reflect our internal state. The real challenge lies in how we manage these thoughts.

10,How to Face Negative Thoughts?

①,Cultivate Mindfulness:

Mindfulness practices help us observe our thoughts without being dominated by them. Through meditation and deep breathing, we can find a thread of calm amidst emotional turbulence, reducing our sense of inner turmoil.

②,Accept Emotional Diversity:

Recognizing the complexity of emotions is essential. Our feelings are not inherently good or bad; they are simply natural responses to our internal states. Acceptance allows us to coexist with various emotions rather than resist them.

③,Transform Negative Emotions:

When negative emotions arise, try to view them as signals rather than adversaries. We can channel these emotions into creative energy through art, movement, or writing, improving our inner state.

④,Establish a Support System:

Communicating and receiving support from others can significantly alleviate psychological pressure. By sharing our feelings, we gain understanding and support, while also drawing inspiration from the experiences of others.

⑤,Seek Inner Meaning:

In the midst of busyness and stress, we often lose ourselves. Taking time to reflect on our values and pursuits helps us find inner tranquility and direction. This inner strength enables us to remain steadfast and optimistic in the face of pressure.

11, What Is the Relationship Between Life, Art, and Chan? Can Ordinary People Live a Life of Chan and Art?

There is a profound connection between life, art, and Chan. Through keen observation and an open heart, ordinary people can experience the beauty of art and the tranquility of Chan in their daily lives. Ultimately, this discovery enriches our lives and deepens our understanding of the essence of art and existence.

The Deep Symbolism of “A Flower and a Smile”

The story of “a flower and a smile” illustrates the relationship between life, art, and Chan. The interaction between the Buddha and Kasyapa appears as an ordinary scene, yet it contains profound Chan wisdom. This moment is not merely a simple combination of a flower and a smile; it represents a deep understanding of the essence of life—an understanding that those who comprehend don’t need further explanation. While ordinary people may perceive the surface, artists may feel a deeper emotion and expression from it. This difference highlights the subtle relationship between art and life.

The Diverse Interpretations of Art

Firstly, we need to understand that the definition of art is not limited to traditional beauty. Art can be beautiful or ugly, and each person’s interpretation of art is personal. Ordinary individuals can begin to contemplate what art means to them, opening their understanding and appreciation of art. This self-reflection is the first step toward discovering the art within life.

How to Discover Art in Daily Life?

①, Cultivate Sensitivity:

To find art in daily life, one must first cultivate sensitivity to their surroundings. Observing details in everyday life, such as changes in light and shadow, color combinations, and even interactions between people, may reveal artistic elements.

②, Enjoy the Moment:

A life infused with Chan emphasizes focusing on and enjoying the present. When we immerse ourselves fully in a moment—whether savoring a cup of tea, admiring a flower, or conversing with a friend—we can experience the artistry of life.

③, Creative Thinking:

Encourage yourself to view life through a creative lens. Try interpreting ordinary things from new perspectives or expressing your feelings through writing, painting, or photography.

④, Embrace Imperfection:

In both art and life, imperfection is often part of beauty. Accepting life’s imperfections, just like the flaws in artistic works, allows us to appreciate the reality and diversity of life more deeply.

Can ordinary people live a life of Chan and art?

Absolutely! Ordinary individuals can entirely embrace a life of Chan and art. The key lies in shifting one’s mindset and re-examining daily experiences. By cultivating an eye for beauty, focusing on the present, and interpreting life creatively, anyone can find the presence of art within everyday life.

12, Why Do You Say That an Artistic Life with a Touch of Chan Means Not Defining Yourself or Life?

An artistic life infused with Chan reflects an open attitude toward existence. While we appreciate and create, we no longer impose definitions on life. As I often say, “Not defining your life—that is the essence of an artistic life.” This philosophy not only enriches our artistic experience but also makes our lives more fulfilling and interesting.

Avoiding the Hollow Pursuit of Art

In contemporary times, many involved in art may feel hollow due to excessive focus on artistic creation. Creating art for the sake of art can sometimes lead to a numb state, causing a loss of original intent and passion. Curators and artists may encounter creative exhaustion, making their artistic practice burdensome and robbing them of enjoyment.

The Importance of Enjoying the Process

The key to artistic creation and living lies in enjoying the journey. If a task becomes a burden, it can lead to fatigue. Thus, whether in artistic creation or daily life, finding a state of relaxation and enjoyment is crucial. Only in such a state can we truly discover the beauty and meaning of life.

The Role of Mind and Consciousness

Our minds and consciousness play vital roles in life and art. They help us assign definitions and perspectives to things. However, many definitions are often artificially constructed. For example, art does not have to be beautiful; it can also be ugly or even meaningless. The diversity of these definitions reminds us that certain things may hold different values in different eyes.

The Wisdom of Not Defining Easily

In life, we should not hastily define ourselves to avoid limiting our potential. As we grow and change, our definitions should also evolve. Maintaining an open mindset nourishes our souls and allows us to discover broader possibilities. Through this process, we can experience an artistic life.

The Integration of Chan and Artistic Living

Combining art with Chan means refraining from imposing conclusions on life or art. This attitude allows us to discover infinite possibilities and beauty in daily life. We are no longer bound by existing definitions but can freely explore the meaning of existence.

Editor’s Note

Engaging with Master Yan Zheng feels like a spiritual practice, providing me with moments of tranquility and laughter in this chaotic world. The combination of life, art, and Chan has not only given me a new perspective on the mundane but has also taught me that maintaining an open mindset allows us to paint the most beautiful colors on the canvas of life. May we all journey lightly along this artistic path and continually discover the beauty in life.
